Dogtown Collar & Leash Policy
Your dog’s safety starts with their collar. To protect all dogs in our care, Dogtown requires that every dog arrive wearing a properly fitted quick-release (snap) collar. This policy is strictly enforced with no exceptions.

Permitted Collars

  • Only quick-release collars with a plastic snap closure are allowed.

  • These collars allow for fast, safe removal in emergencies and reduce the risk of injury during play or handling.

Owners are responsible for ensuring that their dog’s quick-release collar is:

  • Securely fitted, with no more than two fingers of space between the collar and the neck

  • In good condition with no broken or worn parts

Loose collars are a major safety hazard—especially for anxious, excitable, or fearful dogs, who may attempt to back out of a collar in the lobby or during transitions. An improperly fitted collar increases the risk of escape or injury.

Prohibited Collars

The following collars are not allowed under any circumstances:

  • Buckle collars (metal or plastic)

  • Martingale collars

  • Choke chains

  • Prong (pinch) collars

  • Shock (e-collars)

  • Harnesses

  • Head collars (Gentle Leaders)

  • Slip-on collars

  • Flea & tick collars

  • Chain or metal-link collars

  • GPS or AirTag collars

  • Breakaway collars

  • Bandanas, scarves, or any clothing worn around the neck

  • Bark collars

If you are unsure whether your collar is acceptable, please ask in advance.

Lobby Safety & Leash Protocol

  • All dogs must remain leashed when entering and exiting the building.

  • Please do not allow your dog to approach others or wander in the lobby.

  • Check that your dog’s collar is properly secured before arriving. This is especially important for fearful or high-energy dogs, as a loose collar could allow them to slip free.

Again, owners are fully responsible for making sure collars are secure and compliant. Our team cannot take responsibility for dogs arriving with improperly fitted or unsafe gear as it may not be visually apparent before an escape occurs while dealing with a fearful or anxious dog.

Non-Compliant Collars Will Be Removed

If your dog arrives wearing a collar that does not meet our requirements, it will be removed immediately one the dog is securely in the leash areas. It will be put back on and sent home with you at pick up.

Strict Enforcement: There are no exceptions. This policy exists to protect the safety of all dogs and staff.

By following this policy and ensuring your dog wears a secure, well-fitted quick-release collar, you help us create a safe, structured, and positive environment for every dog at Dogtown.

Thank you for taking responsibility for your dog’s safety and for partnering with us in their care.
